Depression, Anxiety & Nutrition

Feeling anxious or depressed at times is very natural and nothing to be ashamed of. These emotions are expressed during the inevitable times of life's pressures. However, when they are prolonged, disproportionate, or brought on for no apparent reason, it's time to address them.

In my case, I suffered off and on for two decades from the co-occurrence of anxiety and depression, and had overwhelming feelings of sadness and despair, brain fog, insomnia, overpowering fear and worry, and weight gain. My prescription medications provided little relief yet caused worsened debilitating and embarrassing side-effects and dependency. All hope to find a true solution to these decades-long emotional problems seemed hopeless.

Fortunately, several studies I found suggested different methods of treatment. I noticed several discussed the combination of magnesium, selenium, and zinc had a very therapeutic effect for depression and anxiety. To find out if I could find relief with supplements, I decided it was the easiest method for me to try and began to incorporate them into my everyday life and switched to eating organic, whole foods.

Adding nutrient-dense foods like dark chocolate, nuts and seeds, avocados, leafy greens, and wild salmon, amongst so much more, replaced all of the processed foods in my pantry and fridge. My health and emotional well-being became a priority, and I noticed an immediate difference when I focused on restorative health methods and used wholesome foods as medicine.

Within the first 30 days of making the switch of adding the supplements and going organic, not only did I feel major relief, I had lost 20 pounds! Aside from soothing feelings of anxiety and depression, the health benefits are endless, such as better digestion, the lowering of cholesterol and blood pressure, elimination of sugar cravings, controlling diabetes, weight loss, balancing hormones, and the detoxifying effects can also help with quitting smoking.

There's no question that mental illness is difficult. Anxiety and depression change the way that you think, feel and behave. There are several approaches towards recovery, and we all too easily relinquish the control of our health and opt for quick relief in taking antidepressants and anxiety medication. These are a band-aid solution and only mask the symptoms without getting to the root cause.

Medication can be very helpful for some but should be used as a last resort. It can feel so unbearable at times, but the first step towards empowerment is taking control over one's health through nutrition. It's a safe and effective method with beneficial results in the evolution of your psychological and physical health.

Overall, diagnoses and various treatment methods exist, and we've come a long way to bring about more awareness, helping to lift the stigma and shame surrounding mental illness. Whether you suffer from anxiety, depression, or any other mental health condition, there are natural and effective methods that can help you feel better, and I hope my story has inspired you to take control of your own health and well-being.
